What Not to Bring – Child and Adolescent Units

You may bring a few personal belongings to the hospital, to help you feel comfortable during your stay.  It is important that you follow these guidelines to keep the unit safe, therapeutic and keep track of your personal items.  We must restrict the following:

  • Shirts with any references to alcohol, drugs, violence, any type of racial inappropriate slurs, sexual content (similar to school standards)
  •  Tank tops of sleeveless shirts / no midriffs or halter tops
  • Clothing that are too loose or big, or too tight, including Cargo pants (no visible undergarments)
  • Any items with skulls
  • Coats or sweatshirts with zippers, hoods, or pockets
  • Clothing with metal studs, rhinestones, or sequins
  • Any clothing with draw-strings (such as sweatpants or sweaters); no scarves or belts
  • Any boots or shoes with buckles, clasps, zippers or shoelaces; No House shoes
  • Electronic devices, including but not limited to: CDs, cameras, CD players, cell phones, computers, MP3 players, and batteries
  • Any outside food or beverages, including candy and gum
  • Stuffed animals, toys, crayons, games, art supplies
  • Metal, glass or mirrored objects
  • Comic books and magazines
  • Multiple books,  no hardback books – exception of school books (1-2 only)
  • Decorative pins, safety pins, sewing pins
  • Nail polish, hairspray and mousse; perfume, make-up (any aerosols)
  • Toxic markers, posters, or typing correction fluids
  • Cigarettes, tobacco products, lighters, matches
  • Mind altering chemicals, including alcohol
  • Mouthwash or other products that contain alcohol
  • Dental floss, tweezers, eyelash curlers, nail clippers or Qtips – Must be supervised
  • Razor Blades
  • Wire Coat Hangers
  • Spiral Notebooks or 3-ring binders
  • Pornographic materials
  • Ink Pens
  • Jewelry (can have plastic spacers)
  • Knives, firearms, or ammunition
  • Curling Irons, hairdryers (must be supervised)
  • Plastic bags
  • Any personal bedding, pillows, or linens
  • Plants or flowers
  • Headbands or Hats; barrettes, ponytail holders with metal, bobby pins

Once on Level 2, parents may bring under $10 for use in the vending machine

Please note: Any items deemed harmful or dangerous by staff will be identified as contraband, confiscated and released to the parents.  If you are unsure, please ask a staff member.  Items will be inspected in the presence of a parent in order to ensure unit safety.

While a patient on the unit, we ask that you please not share clothing items.  Money will be checked in at the Nurses’ station.  We are not responsible for any valuables that are not checked in or sent home.
